South Side Pie Challenge 2014 was a huge success!

We had a great time on November 8th raising money for the Hyde Park/Kenwood Hunger Programs. It looks like we hit $2500 this year–almost doubling what we’ve raised the previous two years! We had 55 pies entered and hundreds came out to eat them. We enjoyed the music of Ken Bigger and Dave Beiser, Matt Farmer, and the Chicago Men’s A Cappella. And we loved our hosts, the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club! Thanks especially to Sarah Diwan and Miriam Sierig for inviting us to hold our best-ever event with them!

We so appreciate all our prize donors, including $100 first prize donors Hyde Park Produce, the Promontory, and Bin 36. Our second prize donors include Pizza Capri of Hyde Park, Seven Ten Lanes, The Sit Down, and H-Dogs of Bronzeville. Third place prize donor was Kirsten Esterly of The Medici who covered all four categories! Thanks for your generosity, donors!

Registration is now open for the 2014 South Side Pie Challenge!

We have a new venue this year! The Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, located at 5480 S. Kenwood Avenue and serving Hyde Park for over 100 years, has generously offered their great space for our celebration of all things pie.

Our event is November 8th. Pie drop off is from 11:00 a.m. to noon. We’re open to the pie-eating public from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. or whenever we run out of pie.

We want you to enter a pie! Does your family have a favorite recipe? Have you been baking as long as you can remember? Have you never, ever baked a pie in your life?

We’ve had winners of every type–from 10 year olds to 80 year olds, from flavor innovators to traditionalists, from first-time bakers to folks famous on the south side for their pies. We hope you take a chance and bring us your best this year. Because on top of everything else that’s great about this pie contest, what we’re doing is for a great cause. All money raised goes straight to the Hyde Park and Kenwood Hunger Programs–they run a soup kitchen and a food pantry that has been in operation for decades. In two years we’ve raised almost $3000. Help us make an even larger contribution this year! Enter a pie, tell your friends, and bring more friends along to eat pie and maybe even watch you win a ribbon.

Here is our registration page. Sign up!
